Promoting Transparency in Your County
Learn to instruct educators, students, and all community-minded leaders on how to work with local officials to bring these documents to light in all former slave holding states. This video was created by an education class at UNC Asheville with the assistance of Dr. Trey Adcock.
People Not Property
People Not Property is led by UNC Greensboro Digital Library on American Slavery, UNC Greensboro, with other collaborating institutions. The project will cull county deed books and abstracts across North Carolina to find records of the sale and transfer of slaves. These records will then be digitized, transcribed, and made freely available to the public for the first time. Update: In June, 2018, UNC Greensboro received a grant for $294,603 from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission to digitize nearly 10,000 North Carolina slave deeds and bills of sale.
